August 1971: Mexico City ist Austragungsort für ein riesiges Fußballspektakel, bei dem Teams aus England, Argentinien, Mexiko, Frankreich, Dänemark und Italien aufeinandertreffen. Über 100.000 Fans verwandeln das historische Azteca-Stadion Spiel für Spiel in einen Ort der Begeisterung, das Fernsehen berichtet durchgehend. Die Atmosphäre erinnert an die größten Momente der internationalen Fußballgeschichte. Aber dieses Turnier ist anders als alles, was es vorher gab, denn auf dem Platz sind ausschließlich Frauen. Es handelt sich um die Copa ’71, die erste inoffizielle Frauenfußball-WM. Von der FIFA und den nationalen Fußballverbänden abgelehnt, wurde dieses historische Ereignis aus den Annalen des Fußballs verdrängt. Doch nun erinnert ein Dokumentarfilm an dieses Turnier, das über zehn Jahre vor der ersten offiziellen Frauenfußball-Weltmeisterschaft stattfand, und rückt die Spielerinnen der damaligen Zeit, die charismatischen Pionierinnen ihrer Sportart, endlich ins Rampenlicht.

We’ll Go Down in History erzählt die Geschichte von TRUK United, einem TIN* Fußballteam aus Großbritannien. Über zwei Jahre begleitet der Dokumentarfilm die Mannschaft auf und neben dem Platz und zeigt, wie sie in Zeiten zunehmender Transfeindlichkeit einen sicheren Ort für ihre Community schafft.

On Monday (Aug. 24, 7 pm), Roter Stern Jena will screen the film Copa 71 at the TaF (Treff am Fichteplatz). The film, which was released in theaters last year, chronicles the forgotten first (unofficial) Women’s World Cup in 1971. On Monday the 31st, 7 pm, we will watch the short documentary We’ll Go Down in History. The screenings will be in English & are free! Everybody is invited 🙂

It is August 1971. Football teams from England, Argentina, Mexico, France, Denmark and Italy are gathering at Mexico City’s sun-drenched Azteca Stadium. The scale of the tournament is monumental: lavish sponsorship, extensive TV coverage, merchandise on every street corner and crowds of over 100,000 hollering fans turn this historic stadium into ‘a cauldron of noise and heat’ match after match. A fawning media treat the players like rock stars. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the greatest moments in international footballing history. But this is a tournament unlike anything that’s happened before. The players on the pitch are all women. And it’s likely you’ve never even heard of it. This is Copa 71, the unofficial Women’s World Cup. Dismissed by both FIFA and domestic football associations around the world, this event has been entirely written out of history. Until now.

WE’LL GO DOWN IN HISTORY tells the story of TRUK United, a grassroots, proudly TIN* football club. Filmed over two years, it captures the team’s highs and lows on and off the pitch as they create a safe haven for their community in the face of rising transphobia.
